Art Night
Perhaps my most favorite time of year is our Art Night. Each year our already colorful campus comes alive with student art displayed throughout; on walls, in trees, within gardens and inside classroom galleries which will be transformed into art studios for students to create more art. Artwork and other items are auctioned off during the evening to help support the school. Art night is a celebration for the whole community. Every class in the school contributes to the event. It illustrates the importance of art in the lives of the students. Also the past two years since we have moved into our new campus we have painted two murals which are unveiled on Art Night. Murals
When you walk onto our campus one of the first things you will see are two amazing murals by Rafael López. With input from SDCCS teachers, staff, and families, López designed the murals by creating imagery that reflects the school values of cooperation, imagination, and creativity. The students and their families painted the mural to help support the pride and community feel of this unique charter school. The work of Rafael López is a fusion of strong graphic style and magical symbolism. His 2008 poster “Voz Unida” was selected by the Obama/Biden campaign as an official poster at Artists for Obama. In 2009, he was invited to create 3 paintings for “The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls” in South Africa. Locally, Rafael López envisioned and led the Urban Art Trail Project that helped transform San Diego's blighted East Village with colorful murals, sculptures and art installations and serves as a model of urban renewal that has been implemented in cities around the nation. We are so lucky to have these beautiful murals and look forward to painting more in the future. View Gallery
